Tamms Year Ten working to end torture in Illinois

After the Sunday, September 12th performance of Under America, a representative from Tamms Year Ten (yearten.org) will introduce the organization and an ex-prisoner of Tamms Super Maximum Security Prison will discuss his experiences while incarcerated.

Tamms Year Ten is an organization fighting for reforms and the closure of Tamms, the only “supermax” in Illinois. Its prisoners are in solitary confinement 23 hours a day, and spend the remaining hour alone in a “yard” slightly larger than their cells. This prolonged isolation—ten years, in some cases—can induce or exacerbate mental illness and is condemned by the Geneva Conventions. Supermax prisons in the United States have also been singled out by the U.N. Committee on Torture.

Join Mortar for the matinee of Under America on the afternoon of Sept. 12th and this intriguing talkback after the performance.

Note: Any may attend the talkback, no tickets necessary. If you plan to see the show a different day, but are interested in attending this event, come by the Athenaeum around 4:30pm on Sunday the 12th and we will seat you after the performance.

Thank you for posting this, It’s just what I had been trying to find on bing. I’d much rather hear opinions from an individual, rather than a corporate site, that’s why I like blogs so much. Thanks!
